Job Overview:
A prominent law firm is seeking a qualified Employee Benefits Attorney to join its Business Law Practice Group, with a focus on health benefits and regulatory compliance. This full-time position supports the growing needs of clients in navigating the complexities of ERISA, HIPAA, the Affordable Care Act, and related laws. The ideal candidate will have deep interest and/or experience in regulatory frameworks impacting third-party health plan service providers. Both partner-track and non-partner-track pathways are available, depending on the candidate’s experience and goals.

Location:

  • Chicago, IL

Duties:

  • Advise clients on compliance with ERISA and federal regulations governing health and welfare benefit plans

  • Provide legal support to employers, insurance carriers, TPAs, PBMs, HRA administrators, and benefits consultants

  • Assist with matters involving:

    • HIPAA

    • Affordable Care Act

    • No Surprises Act

    • Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act

    • Health Savings Accounts (HSAs)

    • Wellness programs and cafeteria plans

  • Analyze and draft regulatory documents, legal memoranda, and complex contracts

  • Stay abreast of evolving legislation, litigation, and regulatory guidance affecting the employee benefits landscape

Requirements:

  • 1–8 years of experience practicing law with a focus on health and welfare benefits or health insurance regulatory compliance

  • Knowledge of ERISA, ACA, HIPAA, and related statutes

  • Proven experience advising benefit plan sponsors or service providers (e.g., PBMs, TPAs)

  • Strong legal research and writing skills

  • Excellent communication, time management, and client service skills

  • Ability to distill complex legal content into clear and concise summaries

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school

Certifications:

  • Active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction

  • Willingness and ability to gain bar admission in the hiring office's jurisdiction if not currently licensed there

Skills:

  • Advanced legal drafting and contract review
